What a NUT!

So, I have neglected the laundry a bit this past week.
To clarify, I did wash & dry the clothes, they just have been sitting in baskets forever waiting to be folded!
This morning we HAD to find black socks for the boys for church.
So, I started dumping baskets on the family room floor in search of them.
I told the kids that when we got home from church, we would all take 30 min. and get it folded quickly.
We have a system that has been working well the past few months.
1.Dump all clothes onto Ashlyn (she LOVES this)
2. Brian & the 4 older kids pick a corner of the room to be 'theirs'.
3. Mom sits by the HUGE pile on Ashlyn and pulls clothes out and throws them at their owners.
4.Once Ashlyn has been 'rescued' she helps 'throwing' clothes to peoples piles.
5. Everyone folds their own clothes (expect Brian does mine & his, while I do Ashlyn & Madelyn's)
Viola! we are done in 30 minutes!

Well, today Duncan wasn't very cooperative.
He hadn't folded ANYTHING after 20 min.!
We were coaxing and bribing, but he was just laying there.

Then Brian threw this at him:
And said to him "Duncan, what's this?"
"A nut!"
Up Duncan shot, and folded a pair of pants!
Then said "Do it again, Dad!"
Each time Brian threw the nut at him, he would fold 2 more items of clothing.
And if he hit him in the head, it would be 3!
I could of never guessed that THAT would be the motivator for folding!
What a little NUT!
Love him!

Fresh Blanket of Snow

Last night we had another snow storm come through.
This was our biggest so far this season (we had 9-10 in. on the ground), and it was beautiful to wake up to.
I love the quiet peace after a snowfall.
Yesterday morning the boys were complaining that we were shoveling the walks after the 3 in. of snow the night before, because we knew we were getting more tonight.
"I just don't see the point of shoveling so that we can wake up and do it all over again!"
Hmm...kind of sound like my life: laundry, dishes, cleaning up the house, just to get up each morning and do it all over again!
"It's good for you!" I said.

Brian & I took a little walk outside before everyone got dressed and started shoveling.
Madelyn wasn't too happy, and watched us from the front window, but it was nice.
This snow was a very wet and heavy snow.
The poor branches suffered a lot.
This is just down our street:
Apparently the driver had just dropped off a family from the airport, so no one was in the back of the van when the tree fell.
We drove around and saw SEVERAL downed trees due to the weight of the snow.
And MANY more broken branches along the way!

After the shoveling was done, we all headed out to play.
The kids had a snow day, and Brian took the day off to play as well!
SLEDDING!!
Ashlyn and I went down together at first.

Then she went over and over again on her own.
 She was so cute!
She would just run and jump onto the tube, a few times barely grabbing on to it before she started flying down!

Out in the field was this giant snowball someone had formed.
The kids had a blast playing on that too!

Madelyn lounged on a tube for the first half of the morning, then finally agreed to go down with me!
 She loved it!
She giggled the whole way down.
The only problem was that I now had to carry her AND the tube up the hill!
I only went down with her twice, then Brian took over.
It was a great morning at the sledding hill!
Heading home.
Time for naps.

SNOW DAY!

This morning we got a nice surprise:
SNOW!
They've been talking about the snow we are supposed to get tonight (6-10 inches), but last night and this morning it was supposed to be rain.
Well, they were WRONG, and we got a SNOW DAY!

Ronan and I ran out first thing and bought doughnuts for everyone for breakfast.
We haven't had doughnuts in, I don't remember when, so it was fun.
We made hot chocolate, and rented a movie as well.
GREAT relaxing morning.
Then around 11:00am, we got dressed and went out to play!

I really hate picking which photos to post, because I just love them ALL!
But, here are a few:
 My cutie pie!

 She's telling me it's "Cold!"

Just love, love, love that face!

 Little sisters together.
Although Ashlyn's face always looks so much smaller to me when she's next to Madelyn!

 Peek-a-boo!

 My snow angel!

Ronan insisted on putting all the snow we shoveled off the driveway into the wheel barrel and dumping it on the side of the house for his 'snow wall'. To be used as protection in the snowball fight that would come later. He likes to plan ahead.

 Boys shoveling.
I went out and helped them this time. Honestly I haven't shoveled in years-I make them do it. BUT, the snow was REALY wet and heavy today. We got a workout!

 Madelyn's little snowman.

 Duncan & his snowman.

 Morgan & her snowman.

 Can you see our hearts?
Ashlyn and Madelyn helped me decorate our front windows and door with hearts for Valentines Day-I love it, and so do they!

Inside from the cold. Time for lunch and naps!
I love snow days!!!

And with more snow expected tonight, we just might get to do this all over again tomorrow!!!

We're our own party!

A few weeks ago my sister asked if she could take the kids on some 'dates' before her classes started up again. SURE! We were talking about ideas of what to do, and who to take to what and such. When we talked about bowling, that was something all of the older 5 would love. So, she said they (her and her boyfriend Jeff) would take them all bowling together on Sat. morning.
Well, when she called to see if she could reserve a lane for Sat. morning, she found out that they had leagues all morning, and open bowling didn't start until 12:30pm.

"Ok, then can I reserve a lane for 12:30"
The woman was a bit short with her:
"Um, we only reserve lanes for a party."
"Ok, then it's a party."
"We only do kids parties, how old is the child."
"10"
"You have to have a minimum of 5 for a party."
"Perfect, we have 5!"
"Ok then, I guess I'll reserve you."

What do ya know, we are our own party!

So, since she technically booked a 'birthday party', we figured why not celebrate a birthday!
Jeff's birthday is in 2 weeks anyway, so it turned into Jeff's 10 year old party!
The kids had a blast (so they tell me). Brian & I took Madelyn out to Indian for lunch, then home for a nap-it was a nice quiet afternoon. We kept saying, "ONE kid! Can you remember what it was like to only have ONE kid!"

In the meantime, Missy & Jeff entertained five kids!
 Jeff & Ashlyn
(who wasn't sure about his beard at first, but got over it)

Jeff loves NASCAR, so Duncan and Ashlyn helped me make him a 'CAR' cake.

 Pizza time!

You just can't go wrong with pizza, soda, cake & bowling!

 Missy & Morgan

Jeff & Ashlyn sending the ball down
And waiting, and waiting for it to reach the pins!

Thanks for the date Aunt Missy & Jeff!
A good time was had by all!
And Happy Birthday to Jeff!

Oh MOM!

Waiting to be washed....

Waiting to be folded....
And a load in the washer and one in the dryer at the moment.

Guess what we did with our snow day!
The kids weren't as excited as I was to get it all done.
BUT, they DID get to go out and play in the morning, and I DID let them watch a movie while we all folded-so it wasn't ALL torture today.
BUT, I didn't get out and take a SINGLE picture!
THAT I am upset about!

Week in review

This past week has felt unusually long.
Not bad, just long.

MONDAY
Dunan was a finalist in the 1st grade Bumble Bee Spelling Bee at school

We went over the words that morning before school.
He kept forgetting the silent 'h' in words like where, when, what.
So we worked hard on those silent 'h's' after a 'w'.
In the 3rd round his word was 'with'.
He spelled it "W H I T H"
I kind of felt responsible for that!
Oh well. He did good and had fun, so it was a success!
And he got a certificate at the end!
He was happy!

On the way home from the spelling bee that day, I realized that I hadn't given Ronan his medicine that morning. It was already too late to do anything about it, and I figured, "Well, I haven't heard any bad news yet, so maybe he's doing fine."
No.
In case there ever was any doubt as to whether or not the med's help him, there is no longer.
When he came home and I told him he didn't have his med's that morning, he cried.
"THAT'S why I was having such a hard time!"
It was a lesson in how much we are thankful for modern medicine when dealing with anxiety.

Monday afternoon brought Piano lessons, swim lessons, family home evening (which Hayden taught, and his friend joined us for), and I rushed off to Roundtable. I'm the Comm. Chair for our Cub Scout Pack, and had to submit some registration forms for an upcoming event.

TUESDAY
I was in a rush to get everyone out the door for school so I could hit the gym.
As I was backing out of the driveway, I realized I hadn't given Ronan his lunch money.
I had no cash in my purse, so ran upstairs to Brian's closet where our "tooth fairy stash" is kept.
In my efforts to reach up so high, I accidentally stepped on a bottle of 'Odor Eaters' shoe powder.
Which exploded.
EVERYWHERE!
The white cloud of dust was so thick, I couldn't see the ground for a minute.
It was everywhere.
All over Brian's shoes, ties, clean pants hanging in the closet, my black gym pants I had on, my shoes.
EVERYWHERE.
I just left it and ran back to the van.
Brushed off my pants, got the kids to school.
Luckily I spoke with a friend earlier that morning who reminded me that the pre-school registration was that morning, so I did that before the gym.

We were expecting a snow storm that afternoon, and the school's closed 1 hour early.
That meant that Ashlyn's pre-school, which meats from 12:30-3:00pm would close at 2:00pm now.
She didn't go.
That would of meant that Madelyn would of only gotten a 1 hour nap before I had to wake her up to go get Ashlyn again. I decided that it wasn't worth it (Madelyn normally sleeps 3 hours).
So, the kids came home early, but the snow didn't start until after dinner, and was pretty light still.
After the kids were in bed, I went out with some ladies to celebrate a friends birthday.
We went to the Cheesecake Factory and had a wonderful time!
When we came out of the restaurant (around 11:15pm) there was a beautiful white blanket of snow on the ground. I've never seen such sparkling snow before-it was beautiful!
That was a good night.

WEDNESDAY
The kids had a 2-hour delay due to the snow.
However Duncan and I did not get to sleep in, as we had to leave at 7:30am for his oral surgery.
He had an extra tooth up top that had to come out.
Brian had this same problem as a kid.
Duncan did very well, they kept saying what a great patient he was.
When he woke up, he asked why everyone left and they didn't do anything.
I told him no one left, they took the tooth out.
"No, you, the doctor, and 2 ladies were there, then I closed my eyes for a second, and only 1 lady was there, and everyone else left. They didn't get the tooth."
It took some time convincing him that he was asleep for 40 min., and that they DID get the tooth.
I showed it to him:

He said "It looks like a torch! I had a torch in my mouth!"
I have to say, it was hilarious watching him 'come to'.
He kept seeing double for a while, and kept saying the floor was coming up to his knees.
All went well though.
I gave him 1 dose of pain medicine at home, and he never needed any more.
By the afternoon he was up and running all over.
Ronan had a slight fever that morning, so he was home as well.
It worked out well, as they had each other to play with.

Wednesday is the day each week one of the kids plan and prepares dinner.
It was Morgan's turn, and she made homemade rolls and Clam Chowder.
Yummy.

Wednesday night was Relief Society. It was a unity activity. I felt bad, because there wasn't many people there at all. Maybe it was the snow on the ground that kept people away, but I felt bad for those who worked so hard to prepare for the evening. I had fun though, AND there was chocolate.

THURSDAY
Ronan had a dentist appointment to have his 'grooves cleaned' and sealants put on. During the process, they found 2 teeth with cavities. They filled one, using only lidocaine (Ashlyn lost movement in her lip for several weeks after whatever they used on her *note* I need to find out what they used). The other tooth with a cavity has a band on it to hold his retainer in place. So, we have to go to the orthodontist, have them remove it, go back to the dentist to have the cavity filled, then back to the orthodontist to have it put back on again.  JUST what I need, MORE appointments to go to!
I feel bad, but I was actually happy that Hayden was home sick this day, as he watched the girls for me while we were at the dentist. Ronan of course tried to play it up afterwards, about how the laughing gas made him sleepy and he needed to stay home the rest of the day. Nope-off to school. After all, he was already home yesterday (and ended up not really being very sick).
That afternoon was "Father's Day" at Ashlyn's pre-school.
The dad's spent the day with them.
She loved it.
Hayden was feeling better by the afternoon, and went to scouts with us.

FRIDAY
Hayden got up with no problems (kind of a rare thing), went down and made breakfast, but came bolting back up the stairs sweating and white faced feeling like he was going to be sick.
I guess he wasn't better after all.
He never got sick, but slept the whole morning.
I took everyone else to school, and went to the gym.
Brian called and told me of this 'Model Home Furniture Sale' that he heard about at work.
It's only on Friday's from 8:00am-3:00pm.
He said if I wanted to go he'd meet me there.
Sure, I'm up for shopping.
So after the gym we met up.
I bought a new couch for the basement (which I've been wanting for 2 years)
Actually we put the new couch in the living room, and the old one in the basement.
I also got a cute hand painted cabinet.
I might be busy every Friday morning now (he he he)!
Duncan's class had won a board game party, and I went to help out in the afternoon.
Since Hayden was home I didn't take the girls to a friends, but put Madelyn down for a nap, and Ashlyn & Hayden watched a movie.
Can I just say that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE having a child old enough to watch the younger kids!
It just makes some things so much more convenient.
I got to run to the grocery store as well, by MYSELF.

Friday night was spent playing video games with Duncan (he's wanted me to play with him for some time, and honestly I just don't get the game, but I still played). Then we stayed up late (which in this house means 10:30pm!!) with the older kids and friends watching The Sorcerer's apprentice.
Good movie. Good night.

SATURDAY
So, here we are, it's Saturday.
Ashlyn gave me this present this morning:
EVERY single piece of clothing she owns is in a pile on her floor.
I want to cry.
I'm tired of cleaning up this child's messes.
I have her clean them up with me, but at 3 I can't just send her in to do it.
It's 4:00pm and the clothes are still on the floor, because I haven't found the umph to tackle that yet.
Instead I choose to blog.
And go to a Dr. appt. with Ronan.
And the library with the 3 oldest kids.
Brian's been hitting the 'honey-do' list today, and I asked that Ashlyn could be his helper.
She went to the hardware store with him, and the dump.
And I had a few less messes because of it.
Love that girl, but sometimes it's good for her to be daddy's helper.

If you actually read all of this, sorry-it's really long.
But I guess YOU did CHOOSE to keep reading.
This was my therapy today, my 'down load' of the week.
Bring on the next one!
